The Race to Harness AI Technology in Asia
Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation present enormous investment opportunities, some in ways we don’t even know yet. As the world adapts to technological advances, Franklin Templeton Emerging Markets Equity's Sukumar Rajah and Eric Mok think some promising developments in Asia could dictate the pace of change in the burgeoning AI market. Alongside this, they think infrastructure for new technology is likely to be just as significant if AI development is to truly thrive. They take a look at the implications for the region.

Alexander Chee on learning to live in—and love—New York.
I had read the Didion essay, had imagined being her there, or being the friend the people owed at a party, or having been so impractical as to have my sheets blowing in the wind outside my window, and it was easy to imagine her past as my future.

Carving up pumpkins and gender inequality.
In a new spin on classic Halloween cinema, filmmaker Sophy Romvari and a friend share stories of creepy encounters with men.
The student loan debt crisis is getting worse. But that doesn’t mean it represents a systemic financial sector risk.
Student loan debt currently has the highest 90+ day delinquency rate of all household debt. More than 1 in 10 borrowers is at least 90 days delinquent, while mortgages and auto loans have a 1.1 percent and 4 percent delinquency rate, respectively.

“The most profound and convincing historian of empire,” Thucydides knew a lot about today’s politics.
A victory won by treachery gave one a title for superior intelligence. And indeed most people are more ready to call villainy cleverness than simple-mindedness honesty. They are proud of the first quality and ashamed of the second.

Ashlee Clark Thompson on how Amazon’s new Go stores counter everything she knows about being black and shopping.
One guy with his phone on a selfie stick recorded himself as he selected snacks. And then there were the folks for whom the novelty had worn off and just wanted a vegetarian banh mi sandwich. No one cared what I was doing. Is this what it feels like to shop when you’re not black?

The National Park Service has its own FBI, with 33 special agents assigned to more than 85 million acres.
“Yosemite is a small town,” ISB agent Steve Kim, who’s based in the California park, told me. “Which means it’s a minefield. And it helps knowing where the mines are.”

Embedded with New York’s alt-right for three months, an antifascist details how white nationalists live and thrive in plain sight.
They were mostly white-collar shitlords testing the waters of trolling in real life. Their pristine “Make America Great Again” hats, displayed boldly in a pack, showed little evidence of prior wear.

With a set of strings attached to a 3D printer, David McCallum manipulates the printer's sounds, playing it like an instrument. From his description of the project:
Six "strings" are stroked to trigger gestures from the printer, and the strength of the stroke affects the expression of the gesture by controlling its pitch. The gestures come from the code to print the strings, so the machine is in effect performing parts of its own construction.

Gold Stocks Will Benefit From Cyclical Change
As we have noted over the many years of the gold sector’s bear market, the gold miners will not rally for real until the real sector and macro fundamentals come into place. Those fundamentals do not include commonly promoted inflation, China/India “love” trades, a US dollar collapse or especially, war, pestilence or any other human misery than economic. The […]

A physics revolution that started with the flicker of a lightbulb.
The origin of quantam mechanics explained in less than five minutes, with nice drawings.
The German government asked the theoretical physicist Max Planck: how can lightbulbs be made more efficient? ... Working backwards from his data in ‘an act of despair’, Planck found that light wasn’t emitted continuously, but rather in discrete packets that he referred to as ‘quanta’. And the rest is the illusory arrow of time that we call history.
