There's a small island (U Thant/Belmont Island) on New York City's East River that technically you're not allowed to visit because it's a sanctuary for migrating birds.
Over the years it's been leased by a Buddhist spiritual group, smashed into by numerous vessels, and briefly occupied by a protesting artist. And now it's been capsized onto by a Vox editor.
Perhaps next will be a visit to Hart Island, where New York continues to bury its unclaimed dead, one million bodies and counting?
