Thanks to Paul Giamatti's punchy refusal in this clip from 2004's Sideways, merlot's sales tanked, pinot noir's popularity shot up, and California wine growers yanked up about 10,000 acres of merlot grapes. In the industry it became known as "the Sideways effect."
But according to a 2016 Wine Intelligence report, merlot is back: the no. 1 varietal of choice for American drinkers of all ages.
