My fascination with epidemics started when I was eight and Compton’s Encyclopedia told me that the bubonic plague had killed 50 million people. I was home from school, in bed with the flu, wearing blue flannel pajamas, and I remember blinking at that figure. It seemed a misprint, but I somehow knew better.
